Manaus is a city in Brazil; the capital of the state of the Amazonas. The state of Amazonas is the largest in Brazil with almost 20% of whole country. The city of Manaus was founded in 1669 as the fort of São José do Rio Negro. It was elevated/ became to a town in 1832 with the name of “Vila Manaós”, and legally transformed into a city “Cidade da Barra do Rio Negro” on October 24th of 1848. Only on September 4th of 1856 the city received the current name Manaus.
The name of Manaus is a tribute to the indigenous nation of Manaós who used to live in this area and its name means “Mothers of Gods”.
